Explorer II 16570 appreciation thread
I purchased mine _again_ recently because I always regretted selling it in the first place. HERE is the story in my blog.
I'm the first one to admit that 16570 is a little bit too small (I'm 6'3 and have relatively large wrists). I almost bought the new 42mm version but I just don't like the large orange hand. This old version is way too good looking. The dial is perfect (black indices, bloody red 24h hand and pure white dial combo). I actually like the black version more of the new Explorer II. It's amazing how small this wears compared to my 16610 Sub (although the diameter on paper is the same). That's why I don't wear it as much. If this were 1-2mm larger and no other changes at all, it could have been the most perfect Rolex watch. But it's too beautiful to not to have in the collection. Thoughts?

It's the orange hand on the 6 digit Explorer II that does it for me.

It’s a fantastic watch, with exceptional proportions. My brother owned one years ago and beat the heck out of it and it kept ticking.
I had mixed emotions over the new version, especially with the increased size. I have small wrists and the 5 digit explorer ii fits perfectly. However it’s one of the updates I get, in that the larger diameter and thicker hands and larger 24 hour hand all increase legibility, especially when you combine that with the new movement. Here the increase in size had functional significance unlike the change to the sub and gmt, where the tweak in case dimension had no functional purpose. |

If Rolex releases an Explorer returned to its 40mm size I would be all over it. The short fat hands on the current 42mm models just don’t do it for me

The current ExpII is all over the place proportion wise. The 16550/16570 was spot on and IMHO the last of the true Rolex tool watches

If I have one small critisism it's that the crown is just too small. Apart from that it's a cracker.

I really love both 6 and 5 digit models. I would go so far as to say the Exp. II is my favorite Rolex model. I currently have a 6 digit with a black face, but the 5 digit polar is what really got me into the Exp. II

I like everything about the 16570. One thing I’m sure of is that objectively, this watch is not too small. If there is a sweet spot for watches that every man and many women can sport, it has to be 40mm. It’s the watch equivalent of “one size fits all “. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a lot both my 114270 and my 34mm OP, but objectively, reasonably, 40mm is the size most can agree on. Turns out the Sub, GMT Master and ExpII are all there. There must be a reason. And I actually prefer the smaller crown. It fits perfectly in, as on my 16710.

I own the same watch and love it for the same reasons you pull back a bit on it, as I'm considerably smaller in stature (6 in shorter).
I think the ExII wears smaller for the same reason the Sub wears bigger. The SS bezel with the SS case push the dial in on the Ex II, while the black bezel work to pull the black dial out on the Sub. I opened your blog in a separate window. I look forward to reading it! |

It has both a classic and traditional look.
I have worn it with the bracelet and the Everest strap, I really prefer the rubber Everest, but switching them back is not easy. |

Completely agree with your comments...especially around the orange hand. Additionally, like most, I love taking pictures of my watches and the most fun is with the polar as it's SO photogenic:
(I sold the black dial version) And for funsies:
