“Box and Papers Bro” origin

I see this a lot in threads. I’m relatively new here, could someone tell me if this is a reference to something specific?

A member here posted a story about a shop assistant who spotted his Rolex and started yelling out repeatedly “box and paper bro”. It was a hilarious read, I hope someone here can post a link to the thread.

One of those classic lines we are going to be repeating forever!

I think it was more of a question than a statement. The sales guy was asking about his watch and said, "Box and papers bro???"

A TRF member went into a store and the sales associate called out his Rolex. The associate made reference to “box and papers bro” as in a way to compliment him on the watch. It didn’t catch at first, but as the customer tried on clothing the sales associate continued to use the saying “box and papers bro” as a way to give agreement or compliment him on the clothing he selected.

That story was nuts lol. I constantly want to throw that line out amongst friends but they obviously wouldn’t get it :/ It’s not funny if you have to explain the joke right?

To my recollection, it was some teenager folding clothes in a department store which elevates the level of hilarity.

I read some of the thread. It is indeed hilarious. Incidentally there is a Ryan Gosling story that has nothing to do with the thread or watches, but it is also crazy.

Thanks for enlightening me.

That Ryan Gosling story was a long setup joke, by the way. The same joke has been used with other actors over the years, including Ryan Reynolds and other current stars at the time.

So I went shopping for some clothes today. There was extremely nice, enthusiastic young guy, very early 20’s, helping me in one of the stores. I was wearing the Hulk and he says “OMG bro! Look at your time piece!” I said “Yeah it’s a discontinued Rolex”. He says “I know dude it’s the Hulk”. I said yeah.

Then he just yells out “Box and papers bro!” I was a little surprised cuz we weren’t really discussing boxes and papers. He then continued on to say “wow man box and papers!” Like several more times.

We talked more and he seemed really interested in watches but not really Rolexes Because of cost and his style was very unique, punky, artsy type. He kind of had a Harry Styles thing going on. As a matter of fact he asked me if I wanted to try on a garment from the women’s section cuz you know that’s cool now. I politely declined. Anyway then he wanted help picking out his first mechanical watch. He explained to me that he is extremely interested in the old technology and the mechanics of watches. He’s been researching for like a year but cannot afford anything that he likes. I showed him some stuff like the new Tissot PRX automatic. I personally think it’s a lot of watch for 650.00. Your getting 70s retro styling, integrated bracelet, visible movement, Swiss made. Well, I think he liked it cuz he yelled out again “Box and papers bro!”

Anyway, I got some nice clothes and helped a fellow watch connosuer. I waved goodbye to my new friend and left with a better understanding of why there are no watches left to buy.

Still makes me laugh every time I think about the story.
As well as 'box and papers bro'
I particularly like 'yeah it's a discontinued Rolex' and he shouts 'I know dude it's the Hulk!'

To me that origin story is so funny the thread is almost sticky-worthy, or at least someone should bump it every once in awhile

I didn't think it was that funny at first but then it actually happened to me. Someone noticed my Rolex and complimented as he was walking out of a tobacco shop going to his car and I was having lunch outside next door. I thanked him then he started saying he has a full gold GMT (126715CHNR) for sale and it has full box and papers bro which he repeated a few times when I said I wasn't interested. "I have it bro, it's the rootbeer, full box and papers, everything".

I recently bought a Speedmaster, NOS from 2019. I think I paid $5700.
I expect to have it forever. It comes with two different NATO straps (as well as the bracelet), a loupe, a tool, a medallion and a box that is nicer than most luggage on the market.

I despise the idea of such ridiculous packaging so I pulled the manual and cards out and put the rest on Ebay. I ended up with just under $400 net of all sales costs.

What’s confusing. He kept the papers, sold the box and made 400 bucks.

I would not have necessarily done this. But I can certainly see how someone would.

I remember that thread, and honestly I believe I responded and I LOVED the fact that the kid was so excited and repeatedly asked box and papers bro?! I think I commented on how it's great that the younger generation is into it all, and they get hype about it too.
