Implant - update

Got my final implant fitting a month ago

However barely a month & there’s a little movement in it
Past week when brushing my teeth as soon as the electric tooth brush went on it - you could hear there’s a different sound like a vibration/ faint clicking sound. There’s definitely slight movement when I touch it with my finger

One for the dentists - I’ve an appointment with hygienist in about 6 weeks. Should I hold off & get her to look at it or get a follow up appointment booked asap ? This wasn’t cheap & disappointed that barely a month in - there’s movement?

(Also - is this normal? The surgeon said at time he didn’t want to over tighten it/ wonder if he was over cautious)

An implant should be rock solid and have no movement are you referring to the crown he didn’t wanna over tighten. I still would see him and speak to him.

Personally, I’d see the surgeon who did the work for a follow up appointment before you have any work done

Did the surgeon put the crown on also?

Usually surgeons don't put crowns on.

The person that put the crown on has to use a torque wrench with specific torque to tighten things down. Talk to that person.

Not normal.

The two in my mouth are rock solid from day one.

The surgeon did everything from day 1 including fitting the crown. He said at time that was wary of over tighting so suspect he erred on side of caution hence why there’s now movement (using the mini torque wrench as you say )

Will drop the surgery a note tomorrow/ see if I can get a follow up appointment asap

Thanks all for replies

My wife has decades of experience, she said, "Is a crown on it or just the post? If the crown is on it it could be loose. Or yes the implant needs tightening. So yeah, it needs to be checked out asap."

Based on what you wrote, i’m assuming that the implant is not buried under the gums. So you either have a post sticking out or a temporary crown while you’re healing. The implant has to take to the jawbone. This can take a few weeks to several weeks sometimes months with certain people. That being said they should not be wiggling once the implant is placed. If the implant is wiggling, I suspect failed implant site. If the post is wiggling, the surgeon did not follow the torque parameters provided to them by the implant company and may or may not have use the right torque meter. If the temporary crown is loose, it may need either re-cementing or if it’s a screw retained temporary crown, it may need tightening or re-cementing as well.

Go see the surgeon ASAP please

Thanks. Will get in contact with surgery in morning

Last month was the final fitting. Whole process from tooth being extracted to final fitting was nearly a year. Post was fitted/ left to heal for a number of months over the spring/ summer.

It was a short post rather than a longer one/ he didn’t mention at ti
E that didn’t want to over tighten so hopefully he was just over cautious & I just need it tightened. If it’s a post failure - I don’t think would go through it again

Ok good so you have the final crown on. I doubt the implant is the issue. Is there any gap between the base/margin of the crown and the gums? I think it will be a cement or screw issue (if the crown is seated correctly).

I am about 12-13 years in with my implant (it’s on one of my canines). When I first got it, the temporary crown had a tiny bit of moment. The permanent crown fixed that.

The implant has been great. It cost as much as a SS Rolex, but worth so much more in my life.

Good luck! Hope your have the same experience over time

Dentist here… most likely it is as others have mentioned it is a loose implant crown which screws into the implant itself. A tightening of that should do the trick of so.

Finally had my follow up appointment this morning

Tooth was getting progressively worse - bit of shoogle now plain to see & very conscious of not eating on that side just incase

Anyway surgeon said if it was post - it would probably have been out by now & thankfully he was right after he checked it out

He drilled the screw cover off to get access to it/ tightened the tooth up/ did some checking that bite ok/ then refilled the screw cover

Last week - must have lost nearly 1/2 stone through lack of eating & hardly slept a wink last night thinking about it - so just glad all worked out ok. Early night tonight

Hope you see steady progress with this.

Dental surgery has to be one of the toughest things to deal with.
