Need opinions …. Rolex OF Paul Newman dial vs Patek Aquanaut 5167

Although it’s obvious this forum favors heavily towards Rolex….. I thought it would be interesting/helpful to hear opinions as far as a Aquanaut 5167a vs a Daytona OF.
Looking to get my first watch and know for certain I want a Sprite, but unsure of which of the other two.
I am currently in a situation when I can pursue a Daytona oysterflex with the Paul Newman dial (black with yellow) or I can potentially get a Patek aquanaut 5167a. I only dress up (suit) maybe once or twice a year so 99% of the time my style is very casual…. jeans/khaki shorts with a tee. This is why the oysterflex and tropical band (rubber) really appeals to me.
I am a huge car enthusiast which is why I have always liked the Daytonas and I like the look of the Paul Newman dial the best. Just feel as if it’s the sportiest and most eye catching of the available dials. I love the Pikachu dial, but feel as if it’s a bit more of a dressy look.
I tried on an Aquanaut a while back and just loved it…. so beautifully understated. Love the fact that it’s steel. I know I can get a white gold Daytona which would actually fit my style better over a yellow gold Daytona, but I don’t love any of the dial options offered in the white gold nearly as much as the Paul Newman.
Although I would never flip a watch… it does make me feel good that I would be walking into an equity of $30,000 if I got the Patek over maybe a $5,000 positive equity if I went into the Daytona OF….. I know it’s silly, but just a minor detail there.
I’d like to pass this watch down to my son down the road.
Do you guys have any suggestions or feedback on wither watch? Clearly if I had a clear favorite I wouldn’t be asking for opinions…. kinda torn between these two and unsure if I want to have two rubber strap watches so trying to feel confident on a choice of these two.
Thanks in advance.

Definitely the 116518 (not the new 126518) PN Daytona, but what makes you think you can get one at retail to retain the $5k in equity? Even if promised by an AD, they likely won’t get anymore 116518s as they have been discontinued.

I say not the 126518 PN because Rolex really screwed up that reference when compared to the 116518 version - used YG hands for chronograph and subdials instead of red and black respectively. That ruined it for me, making me reevaluate my next watch request to my AD. I’m now going for 126519 steel dial with black subs because it’s closest to the 116519. Even the picachu (sp?) in the 12 version got screwed up by Rolex.

I actually prefer the new 126518 (no point ever arguing over taste) and especially the fact that the new 2023 OF Daytonas will come with the glidelock clasp.

If we’re talking msrp here then I’ll vote for the SS Aquanaut. Contrary to the other thread where someone was considering trading their WG OF Daytona for the 5167A at market price, that was a definite no go.

If you are getting the Patek at retail I’d be taking that. You are in a very fortunate position if that was the case so I’d grab the opportunity.

Daytona isn’t that much over retail so if you did decide you wanted it, it’s an easier add down the road.

If you are going grey I’d take the Daytona.

Not sure what exactly the model number but on the Rolex website it’s the “intense black with champagne color” on the yellow gold oysterflex…. that’s the “Paul Newman” that I am wanting.

Yes, that’s what has been referred to as the Paul Newman, but it has lost a lot of flare going from a red chrono hand to gold and black subdial hands to gold.

That’s why I greatly prefer the 116518 version with the “Paul Newman” dial, to the point of removing my interest in that model with my AD.

126518 PN

116518 PN (previous gen)

tough call. Almost a toss up for me. The 5167 was one of my all time favorite watches I owned. All things equal it'd go with the patek. The problem is that the patek costs so much more and it's simply not worth the premium to me, especially when comparing it to an incredible gold daytona that's creeping down in price every day.

Although now it seems to be going back up a little since the dial has technically been retired. Anyway, for the money I'd prefer to have the daytona. I owned both and the 116518 is the one that remains.

Think he has the opportunity to get the patek retail so it’s a no brainer. Cheaper than the Daytona

The 5167 bores me to death so I would take the Daytona over it in a heartbeat. If this was the Daytona versus the 5164, I’d go Patek in that same heartbeat.

That particular Patek does zero for me personally, I’d go with the daytona, and I love that dial!

Even 5167 is an entry level for PP sport watch but if you can get at msrp, I definitely would go for it.

Tough choice…. Both are great watches…. Rolex has many advantages such as glidelock clasp and better strap… movement quality is far superior… Daytona is a superior model historically to Aquanaut…and so on… however, to be honest, the hype factor of Patek is tempting..only u can choose.. No wrong choices…..

In summary:

OF Daytona > 5167
5164/5968 > OF Daytona.

What makes you think you can easily get a 5167A at retail as your very first/second watch in this day and age?

As to the watches... Not interested in OF Daytona and I passed on 5167 a decade ago after trying it on. Preferred 3700/5711 back then and still do, but if I had to get one of your two it would certainly be 5167.

I had a 2-year wait for a 5167 having had 4 previous Pateks from my AD. Unless the AD is a close personal friend, I'd want to clarify wait time. The quality control on the Aquanaut is pretty poor - there is a good YouTube video highlighting the minor imperfections you can spot with a loupe. Once you see them - you can't unsee them. The Daytona has no date - important to bear in mind. 2 very different watches indeed - I do think you need to decide which genre you want.

Go for the Aquanaut, hands down.
Double hands down if it's at retail.

Aquanaut is very hard to get at retail; OF Daytona, not so much.

I would much rather have an OF Daytona vs an Aquanaut. At retail you could get the Aquanaut use it and if you don’t like it sell it and you almost have a free OF Daytona…

Not a fan of the Aquanaut but many buy today to wear the Patek name, yes they make great movements but just dont like the style. And not a huge fan of the modern day Daytona any form but if I had to choose it would be the Daytona.
