Older Root Beer GMT vs. Pepsi or DJ41 (photo heavy)
I'm not one to follow the crowd, but I've been wearing Rolex watches for 30+ years, currently "in-between" watches having put my dull '67 Speedy Pro into auction for September.
I had my 16233 DJ36 TT jubilee champagne tapestry for 20 years; then a brief fling with a (dull) Sub 16610 in 2017; then DJ41 TT jubilee Wimbledon in 2017; then the Speedy in 2020 for three years. I liked the DJ41 and have another, this time silver dial, on order for this year, as under... It'll be new, 5yr warranty, I know it'll fit me nicely, and my wife has a "matching" silver dial 31 (shown with my ex-41)... In reality I think I am a Datejust (and TT) guy through and through and this is a "safe" buy for me. Most here would no doubt say the DJ41 is the dull one as it's not a "Sports" watch which everyone must wear, AND it has gold bits!! Nooooooo! Well, I tried the sports trend with the Sub Date and didn't like it. However... I did try on a new Pepsi in 2018 (shown with my ex-41) and quite liked it on jubilee... I've also tried on older GMTs over the years... The DJ41 on order is £12,100 list. No problem paying this. A good used ceramic GMT Pepsi jubilee is not much more and prices are falling. A good 16710 is £9 - 10,000 and has the added bonus of the extra two bezel inserts at £60 each, new, fitted, from my local AD. But then I spotted something odd. Not liking the ceramic Root Beer I am strangely drawn to this TT jubilee 16753 from 1979, just serviced, "never polished" (I think it may have been at some point)... Whereas I've never been drawn to the Two Tone black dial/bezel insert older GMT, this one just seems to look "right" to me. What's your view? Forget your preferences and embrace mine for one moment... which would you choose: TT DJ41; SS ceramic Pepsi; TT older Root Beer? And if you went for the Tropical Root Beer, how much would you pay? Would it be possible to fit the other three bezel inserts to the 16753? Would they look "right"?... (yes, I know one's a Sub). Unusual for sure!... All viewpoints appreciated. |

Like you, I love TT watches, but on a jubilee. Not too fond of a TT oyster as they are just scratch magnets. Have you considered the new TT GMT on a jubilee? Picked mine up a few months ago and just love it.

While that’s an interesting looking watch, it’s not something I would buy. I have found that when I buy something with an unusual color dial, I get bored of it, and wind up reselling it. My red grape dial OP comes to mind. I really liked it, at first, and then I grew bored, wishing I had chosen the Champagne dial, instead. So, I sold it. I would stick with your original plan, unless this will be in addition to the one you have on order. If not, the one you ordered will look great in any situation. This red dial, root beer bezel GMT, not so much…..

Thanks both.
It could just be that whilst waiting for the DJ41 I'm getting bored and my idle surfing is pulling me in all sorts of directions. It's a quarter four order so could arrive anytime October on, into early 2024. What else might cross my path before then? |

I think you will be happiest, if you just wait for “ the call”. In the meantime, have some fun window shopping, like we all do. What I do is buy a lot of nice low to mid tier Swiss watches, like the new PRX from Tissot, several really nice sports homages from Steinhart, and of course, my beloved Seikos. It sounds like you know what you really want and are just having some speculative fun. Nothing wrong with that.

Not a fan of this one you shared:
Damaged dial, bad hands. I do think a well-kept Root Beer is better than the “or” options you mentioned. I did that many years ago… Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
