Did I make a mistake

Hi everyone.

I was able to pick up my 116500LN last April 2023. A few months ago, I noticed that when I lightly shake the watch, I can hear the rotor (at least I think thats what is) spinning pretty loud. It doesn't make this sound when I shake my 126610LN. I took it to Bucherer and they took it to their in house watch maker. I watched him through the glass, open the caseback. He added a little oil, closed it and then came out to talk to me. He said that he really didn't see any issue but added a little oil just in case. He then said this is a level 50 watch and currently he is only trained to work up to a level 30 watch. Not sure what he meant. Should he even had opened the caseback if that was the case? I wonder if i made a mistake bringing it there since i know for certain it was not pressure tested when it was put back.

I would assume not but you could always take it to another service center and have them pressure test it. But to your original point, the Daytona rotor is noticeably louder. it was that way with my 116520, 116508, and 116515.

The warranty is void if the watch is open by a non-Rolex watch maker

No one here will know if you mad a mistake. For a watch of that caliber - and to employ a 'better than safe than sorry approach' - take the watch to your closest RSC and they will ensure it is tight and right.

Bucherer has certified watchmakers, so presume this was worked on by someone that wouldn't void the warranty: https://www.bucherer.com/rolex/servicing

Nah, you didn't make a mistake.

A Rolex watchmaker can correct me if need be, but I think what they did was add a drop of oil to the ball bearing to address the noise. I had the same issue with my GMT many years ago; I doubt there was anything wrong with your watch's movement to begin with.

I’m sure the level 30 guy knows how to tighten the case all the way. Stop worrying, and just wear it.

You’re fine. The watchmaker helped you out and didn’t really do anything except add oil and close the case.

A Rolex watchmaker worth his salt would always put a new case back gasket and pressure test it after opening.

I can hear mine too. Not a big deal. It got louder after I had a big drop of my watch which I documented here; https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=903924

Even after it was serviced and fixed, the rotor sound remains. Works perfectly otherwise.

Does your watch keep good time? If so, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

116500 is a relatively new watch, I don't think you should be hearing rotor noise. I don't hear it from mine.

I don't think the mistake is on your end, but I don't know why the service guy even opened the watch if he wasn't comfortable servicing it (or he was and it was a minor issue to fix).

The warranty is rendered void if the watch is opened by anyone other than an authorized Rolex watchmaker.

A Level 50 guy would know what to do and probably would not "add oil just in case"

For a watchmaker, I will only use a CW21. Never heard of a level 30 or level 50. Didn't find it on The Google. Maybe it's something internal to your dealer.

Anyway, perhaps you made a mistake allowing an uncertified (on that watch) add oil. I've seen too many watchmaker repair videos where too much oil or the wrong oil was used, and that made matters worse.

The levels are Rolex's way to determine what a person can work on. Level 10 is sizing only. I don't remember 20 or 30. I'm level 40, which includes movement service on 21xx, 22xx, 30xx, 31xx, 32xx movements. Level 50 adds 40s and 41s.

The chronograph really isn't complicated. I wouldn't worry too much about having that watchmaker look at it.

Did you originally purchase the watch from them?

How would an authorized Rolex watchmaker know if a casebook has been opened previously, let alone by a non authorized Rolex watchmaker?

Genuinely curious.

" he added a little oil" may be obvious to RSC.

You have 5 years of warranty left. What you worry about? Just wear it

My older Rolexes have silent rotors. My newer DD and OP I can hear the rotor turning. I was told it is normal because the newer watches have different bearings, but not sure if that is true.

If it's "in house" at Bucherer, would't they be Rolex certified, or not necessarily?

I would not say that was a mistake. But I would say it was unnecessary. You can hear the rotor in a lot of new models. But a watchmaker at an AD. I think you can rest, assured that it is probably OK. Of course, humans can make mistakes, but as far as humans go, he should be pretty good.

Interested in hearing more.

From what I understand as told by my AD, Rolex has an official list of service centers (included ADs) and lists this on their website. And then by each service location, each person there is certified by Rolex for what they can do. The AD had specified that they are certified by movement, but it sounds like it’s not exactly that. Instead there’s levels which associated what can be done at each level? Would love to see a chart or something like. Inner workings of Rolex and how this stuff is managed is quite interesting.

Not a big deal. Was it keeping time and auto winding fine? - If so, don't mess with it.

you would hate the patek movements if you are getting bothered by the daytona movement .

Thank you all for the replies. I really appreciate them.

My watch is running perfect. I guess it was just the OCD in me. As some said, I just gotta wear the watch and enjoy it!

I have and have had a lot of Rolex watches. If you’re used to Patek, they have very loud rotors. When I had a Hulk I was switching between that and a 5167/1A and I noticed if I really cranked my wrist around with the Hulk I could almost hear it.

Other than that, I have never noticed the rotor noise on Rolex pieces.

I do kind of like it on Patek.
