Why there is no love for 124273 - the First 2 tones explorer?

It seem to be one of the few rolex sport watch that get much lower retail price after a while,

is it mean that there is no love at all for it? Why?

Your reasoning is likely correct. Supply and demand equalize at some point and with this one it seems like you can save quite a bit.

I would buy it if it’s TT Rose gold, not the yellow one.

I don't care about market value, i think overall is a nice watch. However, the 19 mm bracelet is a no for me. The 20 mm one would've worked perfectly.

It’s an Explorer. Yet it’s two tone….. but buy it if you love it.

TBH I'd forgotten it exists. Nice watch if you like it, nice price if you want it.

A soft, blingy, metal on a rugged watch built for endurance and activity just hasn’t resonated much since its intro. One of the few Rolex modern misses, although I do think it’s a pretty watch. I would prefer it with a white dial.

In defence of the Explorer Rolesor, I think it’s a very special watch. Not for everyone, and I think the resale market shows that, but it definitely has a place in the catalogue.

It looks better here in your pics than I've ever seen it. TT isn't my cup of tea & I understand the argument that PM/TT on a "tough, sports, outdoorsy" watch doesn't make sense. The irony isn't lost on me, as I type this wearing a hunk of white gold on my wrist. The black, the gold, the steel, it's a bit much for me, a bit too "look at me." I feel most people are with me in that opinion & the resale value(s) reflect that.

I’ve seen it and tried it on, and maybe designers were thinking of it for the ladies? Even I wanted the SS version, as it is a tool watch. It is an attractive piece, though. Also, it’s pricey, as all bimetal pieces are, so that may factor in to its lack of popularity, too.

The simplest analogy is that the 124273 is sexually confused. Likewise are collectors and enthusiasts confused by this piece. Same story with the steel and gold SeaDweller.

I like it! I have a 39 Explorer and an older five digit 36. Tried it on and it just really worked for me. I just need to replenish my watch funds and it could be next on my list.

There have been two-tone Explorers before. The ref 6299 back in the 1950s for example. Later in the 1960s the two-tone Air-King and Explorer shared the 5501 and 5701 (with date complication) reference numbers.

For me, the Explorer is meant to be simple, understated, plain. It’s a functional watch designed to be robust but discreet.

Yellow gold is by its nature quite flashy, luxurious and ostentatious. So it just doesn’t work for me on an Explorer.

Plus two tone watches are generally out of favour and unfashionable - a bit 1980’s/ 90’s.

To me the explorer and explorer 2 should only be offered in steel. I think many people still see it as the ultimate rolex tool, go anywhere do anything type of watch. The gold added gives it unnecessary bling.

Whoever heard of an actual explorer looking for gold?

Seriously though, if they nicknamed it the El Dorado, it'd probably get more traction.

I got mine at Rolex Orlando, nice watch and size for me.

Saw one in the case for sale at an AD in Toronto a few days ago. The second time I have seen one out at that AD. Just not a popular watch.

Not a TT fan and when the SS version is an icon, it make any variation more difficult.

TT is the antithesis of the simple rugged understated Explorer aesthetic. As someone said earlier it looks confused, belt and suspenders, not gold enough to be precious, not stainless enough to be a tool.

Honestly I didn’t like it at first for many of the reasons above, however it’s grown on me a lot. I think it’s a great looking watch! A great deal on the secondary market IMO.

Plenty of other sports/tool watches in TT. Why not an Exp?

All two tone Rolex models, whether sports models or not, will eventually trade below retail if they aren’t already. Secondly, the Explorer crowd are the weirdest and most obsessive about their beloved Explorer. You see it when they discuss the proportions, dial variations, or even the tiniest design changes over the years. The two tone Explorer only added more fuel to their debates, particularly when it comes to anything that deviates from the original design ethos

I guess I’m in that crowd now. To be fair, watch enthusiasts are all a bit obsessive.

It’s a pretty cool reference, but it wore a bit small for me.
